C2 Link Reliability Assessment
The potential degradation of the C2 (Command and Control) link is a significant safety concern. To ensure the UAS ( Unmanned Aircraft System) remains within a safe operational envelope during flight, it must include the following essential functions:
- C2 link monitoring
- C2 link loss recovery
- Automatic C2 link reacquisition
- C2 link loss flight termination
Thorough testing of these functions is critical for ensuring a reliable and safe flight. These systems not only provide the operator with real-time awareness of the C2 link’s status and strength but also enable the safe termination of the flight in the event of a complete link loss, thereby preventing risk to people and property.
Testing encompasses all potential failure modes of the C2 link, both onboard the UAS and within the Ground Station. This allows the Test Engineer to evaluate the system’s behavior under failure conditions and determine whether the platform meets the required assurance level for its intended Class Marking.
